Whichard Residence – Edenton, NC
This historic 1879 Victorian home in downtown Edenton got a stunning interior transformation that blends timeless character with modern comfort. Down East Preservation opened up a once-cramped layout by removing walls and raising ceilings—revealing, in the process, an 18th-century smokehouse hidden within the kitchen structure. We preserved and repurposed the original beams, using them to create vaulted ceilings and warm architectural accents.
Design highlights include a custom copper hood and sink, hand-selected quartzite countertops with copper veining, and original copper plumbing pipes repurposed as island legs. The result is an elegant, airy space that seamlessly connects the kitchen, den, and office—ideal for entertaining and everyday living, all while honoring the home’s rich past.
“Old homes have a reputation for revealing surprises during renovations, but nobody expected the revelation that was unearthed when Maureen asked if they could knock down the wall between the cramped butler’s pantry and the kitchen.”
